Planning an NYC Elopement: A Guide from NYC Wedding Photographers

tips for planning NYC elopement with New York wedding photographers

There’s something undeniably magical about eloping in New York City. Whether it’s a quick City Hall ceremony or exchanging vows in front of an iconic skyline, planning an NYC elopement offers endless romance and energy for your celebration. As NYC wedding photographers who have captured intimate weddings across the city, we’ve put together this guide to help couples plan the perfect NYC elopement!

Two Types of NYC Elopements

City Hall + Photo Adventure:

This is a great option for minimalist couples who want a quick, legal “I do” with epic photos to follow. The NYC Marriage Bureau in Lower Manhattan handles elopements Monday through Friday. After a short civil ceremony, you can explore the city for portraits (think Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, cobblestone streets in SoHo, or a rooftop with skyline views). Make your elopement day feel extra special by hiring a photographer to capture the entire journey. We’ll be with you the whole way, from waiting in line at City Hall to celebrating with coffee or champagne at a cute NYC café.

Landmark Ceremony with Officiant + Photo Shoot:

If you’re dreaming of a more personalized ceremony, consider hiring a licensed officiant and exchanging vows at a public NYC location, like Central Park, Dumbo, Top of the Rock, or even the steps of the New York Public Library. Permits may be required depending on the location, especially if you’re bringing any decor or rentals. Most small elopements (under 20 people with minimal setup) don’t need a permit, but it’s best to check with the NYC Parks Department or venue management to be safe.

Tips for Planning Your NYC Elopement

Find an Officiant Who Gets You:

Whether it’s a spiritual ceremony, a quirky script, or something short and sweet, the right officiant sets the tone. NYC is home to many experienced, creative officiants who specialize in elopements. Book someone who’s flexible and open to unique ideas. You’ll want someone who can adapt to the city’s pace and weather.

Check NYC City Hall Rules Ahead of Time:

You’ll need to apply for a marriage license at least 24 hours before your ceremony. Licenses are valid for 60 days, and appointments at the Marriage Bureau can fill up fast. Just take sure that you know what you need and when you need it by!

Plan Your Photo Shoot Like a Mini Tour:

NYC is full of stunning backdrops, so why settle for just one? With a little planning, your elopement day can double as a romantic city tour with your photographer. Map out 3–4 key locations with your photographer. Consider a vintage taxi or private car to travel around in style and comfort (plus, it’s a great photo op!!).

Allot Enough Travel Time Between Locations:

Traffic in NYC can be unpredictable. Add buffer time between locations, especially during rush hour. If you’re crossing boroughs (say, from Manhattan to Brooklyn), you’ll want to account for at least 30 minutes of travel time—even longer on weekends or during events.

Go Early to Beat the Crowds:

Want that magical shot on the Brooklyn Bridge or Bethesda Terrace without a sea of tourists? Start your day at sunrise or early morning. Not only is the light better, but you’ll have popular spots more to yourself, making for cleaner, more intimate images.

An NYC elopement doesn’t have to be rushed or chaotic. With thoughtful planning, the right vendors, and a bit of flexibility, it can be deeply romantic, stylish, and uniquely yours.
