Things to Consider When Choosing Your Wedding Venue (From Your Photographer)

Choosing the right wedding venue is probably one of the hardest parts of the wedding planning process. It’s the space where your entire day will take place (in most cases) and it truly sets the tone for your celebration. Your venue will serve as the backdrop for your beautiful and special moments. So, how do you decide which venue to pick? There’s so many things to consider, but here’s a few things to keep in mind from your photographer’s perspective for an even more beautiful day!

Getting Ready Suites

One major thing to consider is whether or not your venue will have getting ready suites. If not, you’ll need to plan for a second location and transportation for your first look, ceremony, or the start of your day. If there are suites at the venue, that’s great! Make sure to look at them and check out the lighting. Remember, this is a space where you’ll prepare for your big day! Lots of photos are often captured in getting ready suites. Look for getting ready suites with large windows that allow plenty of natural light. Natural light creates soft, flattering portraits and enhances the overall ambiance of your preparation photos. Ensure the suites are spacious enough to accommodate your bridal party comfortably. A clutter-free environment with neutral decor can serve as a perfect backdrop for detail shots of your dress, shoes, and accessories so take a peek at the colors of the space.

Ceremony Locations

While a lot of couples dream of an outdoor wedding ceremony on a lawn, in a garden, or on a back patio of a venue – the weather doesn’t always cooperate. So, while you’ve probably fallen in love with the outdoor space, make sure to ask about indoor ceremony backup options. Consider the lighting conditions and ambiance of the indoor location to ensure it aligns with your vision. Discuss the rain plan with your venue coordinator and photographer well in advance. Clarify how the transition from outdoor to indoor will be managed to minimize stress on your wedding day. These are decisions you want to make well before your big day. Trust us!

Indoor Photo Location Options for Rainy Days

Again, we’ll always do everything we can to photograph our clients outside on the grounds of the venue they chose for their wedding day. But sometimes the weather doesn’t cooperate. So, assess the indoor areas of the venue for photo opportunities. Look for well-lit spaces with interesting architecture, such as atriums, grand staircases, or elegant lounges, which can serve as beautiful backdrops for indoor portraits. Explore whether the venue has unique indoor features like fireplaces, large windows, or charmingly decorated rooms that can add character to your photos despite being indoors. Plus, these are also great options for dramatic photos – even if the weather is perfect on your big day!

Multiple Weddings at the Venue

Most couples don’t think to ask about whether or not a venue will host more than one wedding at a time. It does happen occasionally, so be sure to ask. If they will be hosting more than one event at a time, there’s a few things to ask about! Ask whether the venue limits access to certain areas or restricts photo sessions if multiple weddings are scheduled simultaneously. Clear communication with the venue coordinator can help you plan accordingly. Discuss your preferences for privacy and exclusive use of certain areas for your wedding photos. Some venues may offer exclusive access or designate specific times for photography to ensure each couple’s experience is special.
